2 Wilson police officers charged with murder in tasing death

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Jared Lakey died July 6, 2019, after he was tased more than 50 times by officers Joshua Taylor, 25, and Brandon Dingman, 34.

Following the tasing of Lakey, which occurred shortly before midnight on July 4, 2019, the Carter County Sheriff’s Office requested the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) assist with the investigation.

According to an affidavit obtained by News 12, Taylor and Dingman initially made contact with Lakey when a call came in that Lakey was running naked down a street in Wilson screaming.

“The two Wilson police officers were trying to take Lakey into custody and he was not cooperating, he was not complying with their requests,” OSBI public information officer Brook Arbeitman said.

Arbeitman said that is when Taylor and Dingman used their tasers on Lakey.

According to court documents, Officer Dingman deployed his taser 23 times for a total of 114 seconds of tasing over nine minutes.

Officer Taylor deployed his taser 30 times for 122 seconds total.

That means Lakey was tased for almost four minutes of that nine minute time frame.

According to court documents, Lakey never strikes, grabs, or makes any aggressive attempt toward either officer during those nine minutes.

The affidavit states neither officer tried to use physical restraint within those nine minutes, though there were multiple opportunities, and at the time Lakey was not fully conscious.

Arbeitman said the medical examiner’s report shows Lakey died the morning of July 6 from complications sustained from the tasing.

“So we turned over our report to the DA early this year and they reviewed it and ultimately the charges were filed,” Arbeitman said.

On Wednesday the district attorney’s office issued arrest warrants for Taylor and Dingman.

Thursday morning both officers turned themselves in to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office.

They were booked on one count each of 2nd Degree Murder.

Both were given a $250,000 bond, and both have bonded out.

Both face 10 years to life in prison if convicted.
