Mystery of British spy found locked in a bag could be solved with single hair
Rokna: MI6 spy Gareth Williams was found naked inside a red holdall in the bathtub of his flat in Pimlico, central London, in 2010, prompting a murder inquiry
The murder of MI6 spy Gareth Williams could be solved by extracting DNA from a single hair found on his hand when he was discovered naked and locked in a bag at flat 11 years ago.
Detectives working on the murder inquiry have been baffled since his body was found inside a red holdall in the bathtub of his flat in Pimlico, central London.
At the time, forensic scientists believed the hair belonged to someone else, but were unable to extract a DNA profile from it.
However, due to technical advances, a leading scientist, Professor Angela Gallop, who founded the laboratory that carried out the testing in the elusive 'spy in the bag' case, says that 2mm of hair can lead to a profile.
Gallop helped catch the killers of Stephen Lawrence and said she would be “happy” to help crack the case.
The detective who led the initial inquiry, Hamish Campbell, has since said that DNA found on the bag
belonging to two unidentified people was worth reviewing.
Police also found DNA on a green towel in Williams’s flat and a hair stuck to the 31-year-old spy’s hand.
“They may have had difficulty if there wasn’t a root on the hair,” Gallop told the Sunday Times. “Nowadays you can get a result out of a tiny length of hair, down to just 2mm.
“This type of test can’t distinguish your DNA from that of your mother or any maternal relatives. However, it could be useful if you wanted to compare somebody specific with the result.”
The Metropolitan Police said it has no plans to conduct a review as the case has been through an investigation and an inquest already
The MI6 spy's death sparked a mystery with when officers found the padlock for the bag was locked on the outside, while the keys were inside with Mr Williams.
In 2013, police said he had probably died by accident as a result of getting into the bag on his own.
But a year earlier an inquest ruled that he had probably been unlawfully killed by persons unknown.Follow the Official Rokna NEWS Telegram Channel For More and fresh NEWS.
