‘Love triangle’ leads to deadly shooting at Volusia County vehicle maintenance facility

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the shooting stemmed from a love triangle.

Damian DeRousha, a 43-year-old special projects coordinator for the county, was arrested for allegedly killing Donald Geno, a master mechanic, at the county facility a little after 10:30 a.m., Chitwood said.

DeRousha is facing a first degree murder charge. He believed Geno was having an inappropriate relationship with his wife, the sheriff said. Geno was in a garage when DeRousha showed up.

“Our victim was working on a vehicle when he walked up to the victim, confronted the victim and fired multiple shots at point blank range,” Chitwood said.

According to the sheriff’s office, DeRousha worked in one building and Geno and DeRousha’s wife worked in another. DeRousha told his supervisor that he had to handle a family issue, left his job and drove to the building next door.

Chitwood said DeRousha went in to Geno’s work area and opened fire.

DeRousha was standing near the facility when Volusia County deputies arrived on scene and admitted to shooting Geno.

The sheriff’s office has not had any interactions or calls for service from any of the three county employees in the past. Chitwood said no one had noticed or reported any odd behavior from DeRousha before he left his job or in the moments before the shooting.

“He just calmly walked up and for lack of a better term, just executed the employee,” Chitwood said. “Somebody made up their mind they were going to commit a murder today and there’s nothing you could do.”
