Virginia man arrested in Naples for attacking a man he claims was not properly social distancing

Rayford Smith, 53, of Glen Allen, Virginia, was sitting on a bench near a pool in the Willough at Naples on Friday, when a man approached him. Smith said the man was too close and he told him to get away, according to a Collier County Sheriff's Office arrest report.

The man walked away, but came back a few minutes later and the victim said Smith became angry, pushed him to the ground, struck him repeatedly and stomped on his face, breaking his dentures.

The victim told deputies that he was unable to defend himself because Smith attacked him so quickly.

The victim was taken to NCH in Naples for treatment. He had several bruises on his face, the report says.

Administrators at the Willough said the incident was captured on camera and the attack appeared to be unprovoked.

Smith was arrested and taken to Naples Jail Center. He was charged with battery and has a court hearing scheduled for Feb. 25.
