Christmas miracle for Army veteran after tracking down long lost love he met in 1969

A 79-year-old man who tried to find a woman he met back in 1969 has finally spoken to her and the pair plan to meet after the pandemic.

Former soldier William Bruce knew it was a long shot when he tried to find Pacharee “Tim” Kaewsorn, after they first met during the Vietnam War.

He had been an army doctor based in Korat at the height of the war when he met a woman named “Mai ” on a brief trip to Chiang Mai.

A whirlwind romance ensued but, after two weeks, he was ordered to Laos following an attack that had killed several of his peers.

Just four days after starting his search, and the story being picked up around the world, a woman identifying herself as Pacharee’s niece reached out to say she believed it was her aunt.

The niece said she remembered seeing one of the photos in the article at her grandmother’s home in Thailand.

She said her aunt confirmed the story, telling her Mai was the name she used for English-speakers.

Bruce from California, in the US, said he was stunned to find her.

He said: “I had to sit down and think and ponder what just happened,” he said.

He said it was amazing that his improbable search – with only old photographs and the wrong name to go on – came to resolution so quickly.

“Think about what just happened," he said.

"All you had was an old photograph no name and an event and time some 50 years ago and yet to find this person in this massive 8 billion people on this planet and she could be anywhere or not even alive."

It turned out that Pacharee was now living in the American state of Florida.

Mr Bruce has now asked for privacy while the two make contact.
